I think that any tools that allow you to select something from an image and isolate that part out from the rest of the image are the ones that I find most useful. The polygonal lasso tool for example. I use this tool all the time to make selections, and while at first it may seem inferior to the regular lasso tool due to the fact that it makes rougher selections, a quick refine edge/mask can be used to easily mitigate this shortcoming. Selections allow me to chose a specific part of the image that I want to change, and non destructively edit it without doing anything detrimental to the rest of the image. For game art I can see it being used to make tiny edits to an image that need special precision to be made.

I love bitmaps. I love working with bitmaps, I love editing bitmaps, I love creating bitmaps, I just love everything about bitmaps. I admit that I have a significant bias towards bitmaps; I've been making dumb little edits to photos since the 5th grade ever since I was introduced to GIMP, and when I learned to use Photoshop, my capacity to create ridiculous internet pictures increased ten-thousandfold. But I understand how to use bitmaps professionally and that they are extremely versatile in that respect. In video games, they're widely used for textures, promotional art, icons, and have a myriad of other applications. I've made some semi-professional bitmap images for school assignments and other things (like the double-exposure Napoleon wallpaper below), and I can say that I definitely prefer working with bitmaps over vectors because I find them to be significantly easier.
